Prose submissions should be 5,000 words or less, and poetry submissions can be up to five pages.

The Columbia Journal is delighted to announce that the 2024 Online Contest will accept submissions in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and translation from February 21 through March 21, 2024. Our translation judge this year is Mónica de la Torre.
Mónica de la Torre is the author of four previous poetry collections - two in Spanish and two in English, and several chapbooks, including The Happy End (The Song Cave). A native of Mexico City, she has translated Latin American poets and co-edited a several multilingual anthologies, most notably Reversible Monuments: Contemporary Mexican Poetry (Copper Canyon). Her work has been published in magazines such as Aufgabe, Convolution, frieze, and The New Yorker, as well as anthologies and exhibit catalogs including Xul Solar and Jorge Luis Borges: The Art of Friendship, Corrected Slogans (Triple Canopy), and The Animated Reader (The New Museum). She was the recipient of a Lannan Foundation residency in 2014.
The four first place winners of the Online Contest will be published online in Spring 2024 and will receive a $250 cash prize each. In addition, up to two finalists may be selected and published per genre.
- Multiple submissions are welcome but note that the entry fee applies to each submission.
- Fiction and nonfiction translation submissions must not exceed 5,000 words. One story per submission. Submissions with more than one story per document will not be considered. Poetry translation submissions may contain up to three poems. Please include a bio/information about the author whose work you have translated.
- Since a blind review process is used, the contest entrant’s name should not appear anywhere on the submitted file. In addition, because we share files electronically, it is the entrant’s responsibility to ensure other identifying notations, including references in the document’s properties and title, are not present.
- We will not accept mailed submissions.
- All work must be original and previously unpublished in any form.

Jeanna Kadlec is a writer, astrologer, former lingerie boutique owner, and recovering academic. Megan Fernandes is a writer living in New York City. Fernandes has published in The New Yorker, POETRY, The Kenyon Review, The American Poetry Review, Ploughshares, among others. Her third book of poetry, I Do Everything I’m Told, was published by Tin House in June 2023. Fernandes is an Associate Professor of English and the Writer-in-Residence at Lafayette College where she teaches courses on poetry, environmental writing, and critical theory. She has received scholarships and fellowships from the Sewanee Writer’s Conference, the Yaddo Foundation, the Hawthornden Foundation, etc. She holds a PhD in English from the University of California, and an MFA in poetry from Boston University. Jonas Eika is a Danish writer whose first novel, Marie House Warehouse, won the 2016 Bodil og Jørgen Munch-Christensen Prize for emerging Danish writers. Eika's next book, the 2019 short story collection After the Sun, received a number of awards including the Nordic Council Literary Prize. Eika lives in Copenhagen.
